IN THE STUDIO, Kit spotted the missing chair from the front row. Everyone took their seats.
Fay sniffed. âI know you lot didnât know Mukta for long, but we was next to each other at our audition. Iâm gonna miss her.â
After yesterdayâs spat, Kit wasnât sure heâd miss Barker.
Izzy put an arm around Fayâs shoulder. âShe was good fun on her last night. That must have been hard. It would have been interesting to see what she came up with next.â
Patrick leaned forward. âItâll only get worse. On the bright side, if itâs me next, Fayâll get a room to herself.â
âShe could now,â Izzy said, âif you moved into Muktaâs room.â
With a cackle, Fay turned to slap Patrick across the thigh. âYou silly sod.â
âWhy canât you move?â he said to Fay.
âIâd miss looking at that hot bod of yours, babe. My Kev hasnât been to the gym since we got married.â She patted her belly. âNot like I can complain. Glass houses and all that.â
Pamela loomed out of the darkness. âRight, you lot. Yesterday was a shambles, but weâve had conversations.â She looked meaningfully at Barker. âSo letâs crack on. Brunaâs in the wings.â
Music. Cameras. Bruna striding along the catwalk in a baseball uniform so tight the fabric strained against her breasts.
Kit legs spasmed, willing him to get onto the stage and let Brunaâs shirt out at the side-seams.
Emilia gasped, then screwed up her face in disgust.
Bruna noticed, and her smile faltered. âCan we do that again? I stumbled.â
âYou did?â Pamela asked, looking to the camera crew for confirmation. âI didnât see you stumble.â
Kit put his arm in the air. âShe did.â
Bruna gave him a tiny nod of thanks. âIâd like to go again.â
Emilia didnât gasp, but she still made the face.
Bruna rose above it. âGood morning, designers. Behind every talented designer is a skilled team. From pattern cutters to seamstresses, everyone has a unique set of skills. For todayâs challenge, you will form two teams and produce three sporty looks for todayâs woman. Thatâs three looks for each team. We will choose team leaders at random.â
A member of the crew scurried onto the catwalk, then handed Bruna a velvet bag.
Even as Bruna stepped down from catwalk and offered the bag to Emilia, Kit knew the smug cow would be a team leader. His certainty didnât stop his stomach turning over when she pulled out a token embossed with the letters TL. The bag moved down the girlsâ row, then up the boysâ row with no one drawing another team leader token. Barker face drained of colour when the bag landed in his hands. He reached into the bag as though snakes writhed at the bottom, then drew out the team leader token. His head turned in Kitâs direction. Kit looked away, studying his lap.
âTeam leaders, please join me on the runway. Emilia, because you drew the first token, you get to choose your first team member, followed by Barker, until youâve picked everyone.â
Fayâs shoulders slumped, then she folded her arms.
